  • Community Options

    Description:

    In early 1992, the volunteer Board of Directors of Community Living Kingston met face to face with 120 service users, family members and Association employees. Together, they decided to reform the sheltered workshop program they had operated since 1965. Both the Association and Board thought that a more viable alternative could be found than the way in which the sheltered workshop programs were being run. At this time the Association was operating a sheltered workshop for approximately 93 people, many of whom had been there since its inception.

    From this initial view, Community Options began and grew to where its is today providing "non-vocational" community based alternatives for adults with a developmental disability.

    CONNECTIONS:

    Community Options has invested in connections with many non-profit agencies, employers, sport and recreation facilities, seniors groups, and educational institutions.

    Community Options provides a variety of community based activities to its participants 19 years of age and up. Such options include career choices, recreation and seniors programs, education and life skills opportunities. Supports are provided by dedicated volunteers, students, and host site staff.

    MISSION

    Enable adults to:

    • Make real choices in self-defined terms, however choices are expressed;
    • Enjoy real friendships and other naturally supportive relationships;
    • Experience the security of unquestioned inclusion in a community that embraces the right of people to live as independently as possible;
    • Be supported to the extent that is necessary to meet individual needs in a manner that uses and respects the ordinary resources in the community.

    Community Options will strive to provide necessary resources and support, both natural and organized, in order to allow individuals to enjoy the lifestyle and activities of their own choosing.
