Family Support Services
Description:
Family Support Workers assist families who have a child or other family member of any age, with an intellectual disability, living with them. Supports are tailored to the needs of the family and may include:- providing planning tools such as transition, estate, short and long-term, and summer planning
- acting as advocates with parents on the family member's behalf
- assisting with funding applications including researching, brokering and advocating
- liaising with other local agencies and supports
- providing information, suggestions and resources such as school information and disability-related groups/information individually and through parent information sessions on various topics on a regular basis
Two summer programs for children and teens are offered:
- The Camp Inclusion Program provides support to enable children aged 6 to 12 to attend regular day camps with their non-disabled peers
- Summer Scene is for youth aged 12 to 16. Small groups of teens are supported to participate in age-appropriate, fun community activities.
Community development and outreach is an integral part of Family Support. There are satellite office hours in Sydenham at the Rural VISIONS Centre and at the Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre monthly.Family Support Workers belong to the provincial Family Support Workers of Ontario Association, which promotes the sharing of information about programs across the province.
www.respiteservices.com facilitates the connection of individuals with disabilities and parent-relief workers through a Family Registry and Worker database. It’s a centralized, collaborative system providing workers and families with information about community respite services and upcoming workshops.
