Welcome to Community Living Kingston
Kingstonians who live with intellectual disability should be full members of, participants in, and contributors to the community. It is generally accepted that they need and deserve support to do so and to deal with the consequences of intellectual disability.
Circumstances have vastly improved compared to when this Association was founded in 1953. There is a greatly improved social acceptance and public respect for the dignity of all citizens. Individuals have made the successful transition to supported independent living situations and shared living arrangements.
There is still much work to be done but there is now a strong foundation on which to build.
For more than 50 years, Community Living has worked to bring people and their communities together:
We support individuals as they develop their capacity to live, learn work and participate in all aspects of living in the community; and we help the community develop its capacity to welcome and support people who have not always had the same opportunities as the rest of us to participate in community life in meaningful, productive ways.
Our Goal:
That people with intellectual disability have every opportunity to participate fully in our community with dignity and independence.
Value-Based Objectives:
- Children have the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing family.
- Children are able to live in their own neighborhood, attend local schools with their peers, and participate in all aspects of school life in a meaningful way.
- Every person has an opportunity for meaningful work and fair compensation.
- Every person is able to live in a safe and secure home with others of their choosing without interference or prejudice.
- Individuals have full access to any organized supports and services from which they might benefit and control over the manner in which they are provided.
- Every person institutionalized because of a developmental disability will return to community life.
- Human, organizational and material resources are secured to achieve the objectives of the Association.
- The objectives of the Association be made visible, understood and accepted within the general community.
